Belgian railways replaces tickets by electronic ID cards using Zineon

From now on, passengers can purchase a ticket online and transfer its data directly onto their eID. Therefore, users need to register their National Identification Number.

This method does not require a personal card reader and also saves on paper as the ticket does not need to be printed.

While travelling by train, the passenger shows his eID to the conductor. He puts the eID into a card reader and using the National Identification Number he can verify if a ticket has been bought online.

During the press conference, the paperless ticket system was defined as ‘practical, simple, quick, environment-friendly and a first in Europe’. Both secretaries of Public Utilities Steven Vanackere  and Administrative Simplification Vincent Van Quickenborne were pleased with this initiative.

Within the next couple of months, the NMBS expects selling a few million paperless tickets using the electronic ID. Regular paper tickets will still be available.
