New info panels at Brussels Airport

For many passengers, the enormous rattling split-flap info panels are the symbols of the airport’s departure hall. But tonight, after 15 years of operation, they are relieved from duty. A new panel will take their place. This newcomer combines the latest TFT technology with the romance of a traditional split-flap panel, which makes it unique in the world.

The old panels needed replacement for multiple reasons. After many years of loyal service, their fine mechanics started failing more and more. The system’s manufacturer no longer existed and there were no more spare parts.

But that’s not all. Because of code share agreements amongst airlines, a single flight can have multiple flight numbers; one for each airline that sells seats on that flight. This means that a single destination was sometimes shown up to seven times on the old split-flap, each time with a different flight number.

The new technology only requires a single line per flight. If a flight has multiple flight operators, their numbers and logos are alternated on this line. The old split-flaps counted 80 lines, but because of the code shares, they could sometimes show only 40 to 50 flights.
The new panel, located between two old panels, shows 96 lines, thus 96 destinations. As a result, it can show flight information for at least a five hour period.

A mechanical split-flap does have its advantages. Its readability is superb, even in direct sunlight. In case of a power failure, flight information remains available. Also price and durability plead in its favor.

On the other hand, showing alternating flight numbers and airline logos, is much easier when using TFT panels. Together with the German manufacturer Conrac and it Belgian partner dZine, Brussels Airport was able to develop a new solution, combining the best of both worlds.

More and more passengers have already checked in at home or at the office when they arrive at the airport. The new panel shows them at what boarding ramp their flight will depart.

Both passengers and companies located in the airport are enthusiastic about the new info panel. Its excellent readability and the fact that nearly twice as many flights can be shown, are very much appreciated.

Next to the big central panel, flight information is also shown on regular TFT panels around the departure hall. The new panel was installed over several nights. It has been tested and fine-tuned for a couple of weeks and is now ready to be the new pride of the airport.
